About ALERT

Society is dynamic: political, social and economic structure; and the values and beliefs undergo constant changes. Law is the most potent instrument of social change. However, in India, despite the existence of the lengthiest Constitution in the world and a plethora of legislations, a positive social change remains as a distant dream. In order to bring about the desired change, mere ‘institutionalization’ (the establishment of a norm with provisions for its enforcement) is not enough; ‘internalization’ (the process by which one imbibe the spirit of such a norm; and voluntarily submit to it) is inevitable. To facilitate these inter-related processes, public opinion and law must go hand in hand.

ALERT - Association for Legal Empowerment & Rural Transformation (registered under the Travancore- Cochin Literary, Scientific, Charitable Societies Registration Act, 1955) primarily intends to act as a platform to generate public opinion in socio-legal issues; and to maintain a proper co-ordination and harmony between the law makers and the public. The principal objectives are:

  • A - Awareness- through informal and formal legal education
  • L - Legal aid- through public interest litigations
  • E - Evaluation- through critical appraisal of judgments, legislations and policies
  • R - Research- through multi-disciplinary approach for law reform
  • T - Training- through customized packages for ‘social engineers’
